Nervous System Regulation: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Support Your Body

Waking up to check your phone as soon as you open your eyes? Oof. And then you wonder why you feel this way.

Being chronically overstimulated has begun to feel like a new normal. As ‘burnout’ culture takes over social media, it seems more adults and even youth are reporting higher symptoms of low motivation and high stress. While you may relate to the phrase ‘scroll until your eyes hurt,’ this isn’t normal. By living in a constant state of overstimulation, your nervous system is slowly frying and impacting your long-term health.

But don’t panic, there’s still hope. When you take the right steps in learning to tend to your nervous system, you can better understand how it works in order to support it and break out of the cycle.

Why do I feel constantly “on”?

We’re currently living in what’s called the “Digital Age.” Almost anything we want is available at our fingertips: things to do, places to go, people to talk to, etc. It’s not to engage in entertainment or look up information anymore.

When a notification goes off, we check it.

A phone rings, we watch the voice mail transcription.

When something demands our attention, it has it almost instantly.

Work, social commitments, and busy schedules keep our productivity high and free-time short. So many of us have are accustomed to feeling overstimulated so often, now sitting still feels uncomfortable.

What does a dysregulated nervous system look like?

According to recent studies by the Global Wellness Institute, “Chronic digital stimulation can heighten cognitive load and sympathetic nervous system activation.” Symptoms of a dysregulated nervous system can look like:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Frequent headaches
  • Digestive issues
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Feelings of depression or hopelessness
  • Irritability or anger
  • Memory problems
  • Racing thoughts or overthinking tendencies
  • “Brain fog”

As more studies are released about the effects of constant stimulation, the demand for a ‘break’ from screens and digital media is getting louder and louder. Staying constantly connected with high-performance expectations can take its toll on your overall health.

Let’s remember this: the original purpose of the nervous system was created to keep you safe, not constantly stressed or overwhelmed.

How does the nervous system work?

Your nervous system is divided into many parts working together to control a whole. The parts we’re mainly focusing on relating to overstimulation are the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).

  • Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) acts as a gas pedal to prep your body for action, ie. your fight or flight response center.
  • Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) helps manage your rest-and-digest functions, ie. easing breathing, slowing heart rate, stopping the rush of stress hormones.

In Dr. Faye Bate’s interview on the “Her Discussions” podcast with Ailey Jolie, MCP and Somatic Psychologist, about Nervous System Regulation, she explains the Stress Response Cycle and briefly explains how it relates to the Digital Age.

“Our body still thinks there’s a bigger threat. Your body and brain have adapted to the digital times and end up mobilizing your stress response cycle. Things naturally tend to stack up and can lead to patterns of tension, bracing, disconnection from the body…etc.”

That being said, understanding how and why your body is reacting this way is a key to making the right moves to support it in getting out of this cycle.

How can I regulate my nervous system?

Honesty. A great way to begin is to search inward. Reflecting in a journal or talking with a trusted friend, the key to regulating your nervous system is to first identify the current stressors in your life:

  • What is making me stressed?
  • What’s causing this overstimulation?
  • How high was my screentime this week?

Your next step would be to think about how to create realistic opportunities for positive change. Not everyone can simply eliminate their stressors. As trendy as the phrase “just quit” has gained popularity on social media, not all lifestyles can support a sudden elimination.

Look at what you can change or swap out in your day-to-day to help eliminate overstimulation. Think about how your current routine could adapt to change over time, and how being more intentional about this lifestyle shift can introduce new ways of recovery. Perhaps it can look like some of these examples:

  • Spending time outdoors
  • Limiting screentime
  • Intentional deep breathing exercises
  • Prioritizing sleep
  • Practicing mindfulness
  • Setting social boundaries
  • Embracing quiet

As your routine begins to shift, your nervous system can begin to settle. So make a point to incorporate small changes so your mind and body can begin to recover. Afterall, relaxation-focused activities and self-care is our favorite way to be intentional about wellness.

The Takeaway

Burnout shouldn’t be as normalized as it is, and yet, more Americans report symptoms of burnout every day. Understanding where your overstimulation is coming from in this digital age we live in can help you figure out where the journey to healing your nervous system can begin. To support your nervous system regulation doesn’t always have to mean cutting out things in life that keep you stressed. To us, that would be a pretty unrealistic approach.

Instead, consider new approaches to self-care and creating opportunities for recovery. Only then will you be able to tend to your nervous system in the way that supports your longevity and overall health.

Massage Etiquette: Things They Don’t Tell You

Going in for a spa service can ironically feel nerve-wracking when it’s your first time. It’s common for clients who haven’t received a service before to feel uncertain, often relating to questions like, “What should I do before my appointment? Should I talk? What if that pressure is too much?”

Your spa experience is supposed to help you relax, not make you worry about if you’re doing everything  ‘right.’  We’re sharing some tips on how massage etiquette isn’t about being perfect, but rather creating a comfortable experience for everyone involved.

Your Massage is Personal

What brought you in today?” It’s the simplest question your massage therapist can ask, and yet many are stumped with how to answer.

Being honest about what you want during your service is important from-the-get-go.

According to the ISA’s (International Spa Association) study in 2025 on What Drives Spa Visits, “85% of spa-goers view spa visits as self-care. Nearly two-thirds name ‘stress reduction’ as key motivators for visiting a spa.”

Your massage therapist’s main goal is to help you relax. Transparency about your goals is all they are looking for. Clear communication allows your experience to be more personalized, so you reach a complete state of physical calm and mental peace.

What Your Massage Therapist Wants You To Know

There’s a few things, so let’s break this up into a few different talk-points.

They Are Paying Closer Attention Than You Think: Your evaluation starts as soon as you walk in the room, or even minutes before. From the way you carry yourself to the tone of voice, LMT’s can tell a lot about you from reading your intake form, and even before asking the reason for your spa visit.

Please, Speak Up: While they can tell a lot from your body language, they cannot read your mind. Be honest about your expectations and wants before and during your service. If the table is too warm, if you need an extra blanket, or even if their pressure is too firm—your massage therapist responds to this feedback to better personalize your experience.

A Little Prep Goes a Long Way: Make time before for a quick clean-up. While your massage therapist understands not everyone is able to bathe before coming in, taking time to remove sweat, dirt, and dead skin helps make the experience more comfortable and hygienic for both parties.

Keep The Relationship Professional: There is a lot of vulnerability in spa services, both for your service provider and yourself. While pouring out about your day when they ask ‘how are you?’ may occur naturally, their main job is to help your muscles and mind relax. Maintain a warm but professional boundary to help create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone involved.

Respect Goes Both Ways: It’s important to understand every massage therapist has a unique approach and style. Avoid direct comparisons during your service to other massage therapists you’ve seen before. If you have service provider preferences, it’s best to communicate them with the front desk staff upon exiting your service.

Remember: Be an Active Participant

The best massage experiences aren’t the ones with barely any commentary. When visiting a MassageLuXe spa for the first time, your goal should be two things: honesty & communication.

Your massage therapist will handle the relaxation part during your service. By communicating clear expectations and information about your body, your massage experience can be more personalized to your goals. So don’t be afraid coming in for your first service, rather be prepared.

Massage Etiquette Tips to Remember

It’s not about being the perfect client but rather giving yourself permission to prioritize your own comfort. Prepping before your service and keeping these things in mind are the perfect way to get ready for a relaxing experience. And if you’re still nervous—check out these other tips on Massage Etiquette: Know Before You Go

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting a Routine

Beginning a new wellness routine can be daunting.

With hundreds upon thousands of choices to choose from, it’s hard to know what is going to work for your body and lifestyle. As the health and wellness industry booms and new research is released every day, it’s important to do the research before beginning a commitment. We’ve come up with a few helpful questions to consider before getting started:

What am I trying to achieve?

As simple as it may sound, clearly understanding the depth behind your goal will help you determine how much time and energy you need to be pouring into it. This is where you get into your current values and where your goal ties into them.

Are you trying to boost confidence or maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Regardless, understanding the root of your goal will help you shape your next steps and whether or not there is deeper work that needs to be done.

For example, if you’re looking to improve your skincare routine – you may book a professional facial and talk with a licensed esthetician about your skin type. But if you’re hoping to release pent up stressors from the week, you may want to consider talking with a professional counselor.

Think about it. Journal about it. Figure out where your heart lies with your goals and start from there.

Does this make sense right now?

While it may be normal for the algorithm to tell you to ‘ditch whatever you’re doing and start doing this,’ (our latest blog for #NationalRelaxationDay being an exception), taking careful consideration of your current lifestyle is important. Being influenced to make healthy swaps and buy skincare products that promise lasting results isn’t a bad thing, but doing everything at once can be next to impossible for the modern person in society not getting influencer deals and discounts.

Think of what you’re already doing, and how you can slowly start to incorporate that new thing.

For example, if you’re wanting to switch to products without fragrance and artificial ingredients, instead of throwing everything out in your closet—simply replace things as they empty.

Save your wallet and make mindful decisions to how you can apply this change in your current situation.

What are the long-term benefits?

Are you wanting to take part because it’s trendy or because you see long-term benefits?

Either way, starting a routine isn’t something to take lightly so look at what this could look like in 2 weeks, 2 months, and even 2 years before investing your time and energy.

A good way to find out is to talk to someone already doing the routine to see what benefits it’s brought to their life. Ask if they encountered any struggles or discomfort along the way.  Knowing both sides to the story before committing can help you decide whether or not this will be something you want in your life right now or in the future.

What will happen if I have an ‘off’ day or I don’t want to do it anymore?

One of the best things you can be for yourself is realistic. Off seasons are natural in the human lifestyle, so it’s important to allow yourself grace in this new routine for the days when you simply ‘don’t feel like doing it.’ Think about the time and financial commitments you are making, and what it looks like if you don’t show up.

At MassageLuXe, not every member uses their monthly service. We understand life happens and to-do lists can take over. That’s why we simply let unused hours accumulate in our members’ accounts until they are ready to use them.

Remember: You are a human.

Meaning you’re entitled to days where you probably don’t feel your best. Think of what grace looks like as a part of this routine and if it’s something you would be okay with skipping if you need to.

How do I get started?

Ease into the process without startling your current lifestyle. While ‘full sending it’ may be exhilarating, don’t shock your system or your wallet by jumping into something without a plan. Ask questions, write checklists, review your budget, or connect with someone who’s a pro.

Most members at MassageLuXe didn’t get introduced to our brand by purchasing a membership for massage straight-away. They came in for a service and enjoyed their time, connected with service providers they saw results from, and were intentional about making relaxation and self-care a part of their monthly routine.

As you consider starting a new routine, remember to ask yourself these questions to ensure you’re pouring your time and energy into something that’s going to give back as much to you as you are to it.

Ditch Your Phone for #NationalRelaxationDay

When's the last time you sat still without reaching for your phone?

It’s a quick, unconscious habit most of us do without a second thought, and part of the reason your nervous system could be struggling to “turn-off.” National Relaxation Day (August 15, 2026) is the perfect excuse to do something about it.

But first, let’s get into the ‘why’ decreasing your screentime can benefit your health.

Help Your Nervous System Clock Out

Even when you're "relaxing" on the couch, if your phone's within reach, your nervous system probably isn't. Every notification and scroll keeps your body in a low simmer of alert, never quite reaching real rest. It's not just a feeling, either — a study published in BMC Medicine found that people who spend five or more hours a day on their phones are 71% more likely to experience anxiety or depression.

Staying constantly connected could be the reason why you’re not able to feel completely rested. Making a conscious effort to reduce screen time is the first step to disconnecting.

Small Habits Matter

Not everyone can completely ‘ditch’ the phone (as much as you’d probably like to), so try setting some boundaries with your screen time by introducing other, new habits instead. Consider trying these things out this month and reflect on how you feel afterwards.

  • Leave your phone in another room during at least one meal a day
  • Trade your evening scroll for reading a tangible book, or journaling
  • Take a quiet walk without a podcast or playlist to allow your brain to wander
  • Set a phone-free hour each evening to give your nervous system room to downshift

Giving Your Body a Physical Reset

Putting the phone down is a start, but your body may need more assistance fully letting go. That's where massage and self-care come in. One of the most effective ways to physically interrupt the stress response looks like easing tension in your muscles, allowing nervous system full permission to rest screen-free.

This #NationalRelaxationDay, remember to allow yourself the feeling of letting go. Book a session at MassageLuXe and give your body (and your phone) a break.

Summer Self-Care: Habits to Refresh Your Routine

Summer brings longer days, packed schedules, and plenty of opportunities to prioritize yourself—or forget to. The good news? Self-care doesn't have to be complicated. Here are five simple wellness trends worth trying this summer.

1. Wellness Stacking

One of the biggest wellness trends right now is wellness stacking: pairing two habits together to make the most of your time. Think walking while listening to a podcast, journaling during a face mask, or stretching while watching your favorite show.

Instead of adding more to your routine, you're making existing habits work harder for you.

2. Upgrade Your Hydration

Staying hydrated isn't just about drinking more water. When temperatures rise, your body also loses important minerals like sodium, magnesium, and potassium.

Try adding an electrolyte drink to your day, enjoying hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumber, or starting your morning with a glass of water before your coffee.

3. Get Morning Sunlight

Spending a few minutes outside shortly after waking can help support your body's natural sleep-wake cycle, improve mood, and boost focus.

Take your coffee outdoors, leave your phone inside, and soak up a little natural light. Even five minutes can make a difference.

  1. 4. Turn Your Shower Into a Reset

The "everything shower" trend has evolved into a full self-care ritual. Instead of rushing through, slow down. Exfoliate, use a hair treatment, try a scalp massage, or simply enjoy a few uninterrupted moments of relaxation.

Sometimes 20 intentional minutes can do wonders for your stress levels.

5. Create a Micro-Retreat

You don't need a vacation to recharge. A micro-retreat is simply setting aside dedicated time to rest and reset. Whether that's a quiet morning, a walk in nature or a few hours without obligations, creating space for a break during your day is essential.

To take relaxation even further, consider incorporating massage into your routine. Massage therapy can help reduce stress, ease tension, and give your body the opportunity to truly unwind.

Self-care doesn't have to be time-consuming, expensive, or perfectly planned to make an impact. Sometimes the most effective wellness habits are the simplest ones: drinking more water, getting outside, slowing down for a few minutes, or making time for rest.

This summer, focus on small, sustainable practices that fit naturally into your routine.

How to Heal from Stress Addiction

When was the last time you sat and did nothing? This can feel like a trick question for someone who is a busy-body. Moments of stillness bring discomfort rather than relief, and a sudden drop in stimulation can create irritability.

But how did this happen?  How did we get here?

Chances are, your body has been in go-mode for so long it doesn’t know what to do during ‘no-mode.’ Let’s learn the signs of stress-addiction and what to do to combat them.

Signs You’re Addicted to Stress

Most people who consider themselves ‘busy-bodies’ showcase higher levels of cortisol and adrenaline. According to scientists online from Harvard University, this creates a never-ending circle of chaos: The Hormone Loop.

This is a biochemical loop scientists have discovered those with addiction fall into because they associate productivity with safety and reward. Three common signs of people who are addicted to stress:

  • Avoiding restful activities
  • Constantly checking notifications
  • People-pleasing / saying “yes” to everything

Unfortunately, stress addiction is a common occurrence today. Due to the societal encouragement of constant communication and connectivity, most people have a hard time “turning off.” Just in America alone, the average American checks their phone about 186 times per day, about every 5 minutes while awake. This adds up to averaging about 5+ hours of screentime per person.

As a culture constantly stimulated with screens, emails, and asks, taking a serious time out is necessary for health and longevity.

Step One:

Often the most uncomfortable step is the first: Admittance. Recognizing symptoms in yourself of over-work, over-stress, and having an ‘over-it’ attitude are essential for getting on the path to self-care. Some questions to consider:

  • When is the last time you took a break?
  • Do you thrive on tight deadlines?
  • Do you often procrastinate?
  • Is downtime difficult to manage?
  • Do you show impatience or irritability when others are speaking?
  • Have you done any favorite hobbies lately?
  • How long has it been since you checked your phone?
  • Do you often feel like there isn’t enough time in a day to accomplish tasks?

Unfortunately, stress-addiction is often recognized by family and friends before we notice it ourselves. If you’re having trouble answering these questions alone, ask someone to look over them with you so you can continue to the next step of healing: doing something about it.

Step Two:

Now that you've identified the problem, it's time to get comfortable with the uncomfortable: doing less.

According to Mayo Clinic Health System, the antidote to stress addiction is slowing down and embracing the nothing. Meaning, it’s beneficial to be bored.

When your brain finally stops sprinting through tasks, it enters what researchers call the “default mode network,” a resting state where some of the brain's most important work happens. During this quiet time, your brain can slow down and begin to reflect, daydream, and even come up with new, creative ideas.

Most of us have accidentally trained ourselves to escape this feeling the moment it arrives. We reach for our phones, open another tab, or add another item to the to-do list, anything to avoid sitting with stillness.

Some ways we recommend embracing ‘boring’ moments during the day is to make them more intentional:

  • Take a 10-minute walk outside — no podcast, no playlist
  • Sit with your morning coffee before opening your phone
  • Let yourself be bored in line at the grocery store instead of scrolling
  • Cook a meal without background TV or music

Step Three

This next piece of information might be hard to swallow for the over-achievers in the room, but here it is: Rest isn't a reward. Rest is a prerequisite.

Scientific research proves that people who allow their brains to regularly enter a resting state think more creatively, problem-solve more effectively, and experience lower overall anxiety.

This means scheduling downtime the same way you'd schedule a meeting. Block it. Protect it. And if you need a little help convincing your nervous system that it's safe to slow down, that's exactly what we're here for.

Give Your Body Permission to Rest

At MassageLuXe, we believe rest is a radical act that deserves space to be taken. One of the most effective tools for interrupting the stress cycle is massage therapy. A therapeutic massage helps lower cortisol levels, activate the parasympathetic nervous system (your body's "rest and digest" mode), and signal to your brain that you are, in fact, safe to slow down.

Whether you're just beginning to recognize the signs of stress addiction or you've been running on empty for years, your body deserves a reset.

Massage Etiquette: Know Before You Go

Massage therapy has been highly respected practice for thousands of years, yet some are new to the experience. Whether you received a certificate as a gift, are celebrating a special occasion, or you just needed a ‘pick-me-up’ from the week--you are required to do very little in terms of showing up to get your massage.

However, there are a few things you should know to enjoy your experience to the fullest.

Tip One: Save your politeness for another conversation

Upon being taken back to your private room, your massage therapist will introduce themselves and ask a few questions about your service expectations. Typically, they ask questions along the lines of:

“Are there any areas of concern?”

“What’s your goal for today?”

The floor is yours.

Full transparency is encouraged to be communicated, so don’t be shy if you have a question or if there’s a particular area that you would like for them to avoid. Clear communication with your massage therapist helps them understand the goals for your visit, as well as respect your boundaries for safety & comfort.

In addition, if you prefer a quiet massage experience kindly let them know you are there to “unwind.” If at any point you experience discomfort in your massage and are afraid to speak-up, all MassageLuXe massage tables are equipped with a courtesy button located underneath the head area for easy access. Pressing this button will signal to the front desk that you request an additional staff member to be present.

Tip Two: Undress to your comfort level and get underneath the sheets

Many people coming in for a first-time massage may be nervous at the thought of undressing fully for the experience. Your massage therapist will tell you to ‘undress to your comfort level’ before stepping out of the room. Pro-tip: You don’t have to go fully nude. Wearing your undergarments is more common than you think. For those wearing bras, your therapist may ask you to unclip them when you flip on your stomach so they can work on your back.

The main reason for undressing during your massage is so your therapist can work on muscles without interruption. They may also incorporate oils into the service to create smooth, continuous strokes that glide effortlessly along your body to improve blood circulation while performing deep tissue work. This is where the magic of relaxation happens.

So before your therapist steps back in the room, be sure to undress to your comfortability and fully cover your body from the neck down on the massage table with the provided sheets so when your massage therapist re-enters the room, they can begin service.

Tip Three: Silence your devices, it’s time to unwind

With all respect, don’t ruin the moment for yourself (or others). We highly suggest silencing devices upon entering our spa. You see reminders when stepping into the LuXe Lounge area after checking-in, so that is a good time to let your friends in your phone know it’s time for some ‘you-time.’

Spas are known for invoking feelings of relaxation while being an escape for the mind and body. MassageLuXe highly aspires to create a luxurious experience for our members. Allow yourself to disconnect from your device and step into an hour or so of relaxation so you can experience the full effects of your visit.

These are frequent reminders we like to recommend to anyone coming in to our spa locations so they know what to expect. Whether it’s your first time, or fifth time, our MassageLuXe staff will be there to assist with any questions that come up during your service and provide the most respectful care possible.

So sit back, relax, and turn off your phone…it’s time to unwind.

Small Joys to Replace Screen Time

Scroll through your favorite social platform lately and you’ve probably noticed the shift. Soft lighting, paperback books, slow morning coffees, hand-written journals. “Romanticizing life” has become a quiet rebellion against the screens demanding our attention all day. And during Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s worth asking: When was the last time you let your brain truly rest?

The Burnout Behind the Scroll

More and more social media users are openly sharing symptoms of burnout, exhaustion, and overstimulation.  A 2024 study found that information overload and constant connectivity are significant contributors to emotional exhaustion and digital burnout. The pings, the comparison loop, the endless “just one more video,” your brain is processing more in a single day than your great-grandmother did in a week.

Users in a recent study showed that just one week of reduced social media use led to a 16% drop in anxiety and a 25% drop in depression symptoms. Translation: your brain is asking for a break, and it doesn’t take long to feel a difference.

Screenless Daily Life Routines

The beauty of going screenless isn’t about doing less, but about enjoying more of what you already have. Try swapping a scrolling session for:

  • A quiet cup of tea on the porch, phone left inside
  • A walk through your neighborhood with a favorite playlist or just birdsong
  • A paperback book and a candle in the evening
  • A long bath with a face mask and zero notifications
  • A handwritten journal entry instead of an Instagram caption

These small rituals create space for your nervous system to settle, your thoughts to organize, and your mood to lift on its own.

A Calmer Kind of Self-Care

When you’re ready to take it one step further, give your body the same gift you’re giving your mind. A massage at MassageLuXe is one of the most intentional ways to unplug: a quiet hour built entirely around resting, breathing, and coming back to yourself.

The Quiet Cost of “Toughing It Out”

A recent survey found that 65% of men hesitate to seek professional help for stress management, while nearly half of men in America admit they feel more stressed than they let on. Supporting the men in your life starts with recognizing that stress doesn’t always look obvious. Encouraging moments of rest, recovery, and self-care can have a meaningful impact on both physical and mental well-being. After all, those who prioritize self-care are often shown to live healthier, happier lives.

In other words, the man in your life may be carrying more stress than he realizes, and it could be affecting his long-term health.

Stress Lingering in the Body

Unmanaged stress doesn’t just stay in the mind. It shows up in tight shoulders, restless sleep, clenched jaws, and a constant low-grade fatigue no amount of coffee can seem to fix. Over time, chronic stress can contribute to a variety of health disorders. High blood pressure, weakened immunity, and a higher risk of heart disease are all common denominators in those without stress-reducing routines. Unfortunately, these health complications are also statistically included in higher rates in men than women.

The good news? We have a helpful solution to help the man in your life begin his self-care journey. Stress relief doesn’t have to start with a hard conversation, but it can start with just a single hour of intentional rest.

How Massage Can Help

Massage therapy is one of the simplest, most approachable ways to support stress management. Getting a regular massage can:

  • Lower cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone
  • Ease muscle tension built up from long workdays
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift into “rest” mode

Surveys online are showing majority of men in America are beginning to consider massage less as a trend and more like a practical reset.

A Small Step Worth Taking

This Men’s Health Month, consider gifting the man in your life (or yourself) a massage or a membership at MassageLuXe. It’s a simple, meaningful way to care for the people you love while building healthier habits that last well beyond June.
