How 2020 May Be Affecting Your Skin and What You Can Do

Have you noticed a change in your skin this year? Well, you are not alone. Maskne, which is acne caused by sweat, oil, and bacteria trapped under your mask, is one thing, but you may also be noticing changes in your skin’s glow or your complexion. Why? We asked one of our licensed estheticians to weigh in. Staying Inside Affects the Skin

Different Day, Same Air If you’re spending a lot of time at home, you are likely to be exposed to dry air that has been recirculated.

What you can do: Be sure to use a moisturizer with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to keep skin moisturized.

Sunshine Makes the Skin Shine Vitamin D plays a key role in the repair and reproduction of cells by boosting your immune system. This, in turn, fights off free radicals that cause cell damage. Without vitamin D, your skin will look dull and sallow. You may even see an increase in breakouts.

What you can do: Get outside for a few minutes a day or even stay close to a window (be sure not to skip the sun protection as damaging UV rays can penetrate through glass).

Put Down Your Phone – for a Minute! Increased screen time on electronics is causing wrinkles. You’re bending your neck to look down at your phone, which spurs fine lines.

What you can do: Take a break from your phone and when you can, keep your neck straight.

Visit MassageLuXe to Find Relief

Refresh your skin and let your inner glow shine with a MassageLuXe Spa facial. Our beautifying and beneficial facials are a perfect way to combat the impacts of staying indoors. MassageLuXe facials are designed to be beneficial for your skin as well as stress-reducing and calming for your mind. The MassageLuXe Spa experience offers a complete line of facials and customized treatments catered to all skin types and conditions. Stress Affects the Skin Your Body is Fighting Back When you are stressed, stress hormones are released. These hormones have an impact on your cell turnover and your immune system response. This causes inflammation in your skin.

What you can do: Set aside time for self-care to destress.

Don’t Touch Your Face People tend to pick at their skin when they are stressed. This can result in small wounds and scarring.

What you can do: Keep your nails short and try not to touch your face.

Diet and Alcohol Intake Play a Role When you are stressed, it’s natural to change your diet or drink alcohol more often. This can cause breakouts and/or dryness in your skin.

What you can do: Increase your water intake and choose healthy foods.

Get Some ZZs When you’re stressed, it can be hard to sleep. When your sleep schedule is disrupted, it can cause breakouts, dryness, and dull skin. While you are sleeping, your skin is producing collagen, which helps your skin appear younger. Less sleep = more signs of aging.

What you can do: Find a way that helps you wind down at the end of the day (ex: bath, stretching, read a book) so that you can get the rest you and your skin needs to look it’s best.

Visit MassageLuXe to Find Relief. Our luxurious facial services will help you leave your cares behind. Skin health can relieve stress and anxiety, which improves your mental health and wellbeing. A MassageLuXe facial is the perfect way to reset your mind and, in turn, rejuvenate your skin.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

Routine massage is beneficial to your health. Everyone’s body is different. One person might need more massages, while another could go a month without really needing another massage. To experience the benefits, you should be receiving monthly massages at a minimum.

Monthly massage keeps your body and mind balanced to help improve or maintain your overall wellness. At MassageLuXe, we have monthly membership packages that make it easy for you to prioritize monthly massage in your life. In addition to your monthly massage, you also get unlimited access to our water massage table, the HydroLuXe, with your membership.

Not only will a monthly massage help to clear your mind and send you into relaxation, but there are also other benefits to this service.

Reduction of Anxiety and Depression

Several studies have shown that massage can help people of all ages with depression and anxiety. One of the reasons why massage can feel so relaxing is because it helps the body release dopamine, a "feel good" chemical in the nervous system.

Boosts Immune System

Studies have shown that people who receive regular massage experienced an increase in their white blood cell count. White blood cells, also called leukocytes, help us fight off infections and illnesses. At the same time, their blood samples showed a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol, something that can compromise the immune system.

Eases Pain

Massage eases pain in many ways. It improves circulation so blood can help achy areas heal faster, and it also helps the body release endorphins that act as a natural pain reducer.

Helps You Sleep

Massage helps you relax and causes your body to release serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with calmness and sleep.

We could go on forever about the health benefits of regular massage, but your health starts with YOU. MassageLuXe has many massage options to choose from, and we are here for you as you prioritize your health and wellbeing. Book your appointment today!

Deep Tissue or Swedish Massage?

Deep tissue and Swedish massage are both wonderful but are used for different reasons. It is important to understand the goals of these two services so you know what you are choosing when you book your appointment.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is sometimes called a classic massage because it is one of the most common forms of massage therapy and is the most commonly requested. This massage is designed to stimulate circulation, ease surface level tension, and ultimately, relax and relieve stress.

What to Expect During a Swedish Massage:

Your licensed massage therapist will use long, kneading strokes and deep, circular movements to increase the flow of oxygen into the bloodstream to provide muscle relief and relaxation, which helps flush lactic and uric acids from your body.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage builds on Swedish massage utilizing many of its essential strokes but applies more pressure. Deep tissue massage works into deeper layers of muscle and fascia to break up tight knots. This type of massage is often used to address chronic pain and relieve deep layers of tension.

What to Expect During a Deep Tissue Massage:

Whereas Swedish massage is typically performed with the hands and fingertips, deep tissue massage also utilizes elbows and forearms to reach deep layers of muscle tissue. Deep tissue massage will be a balance between a satisfying release of tension and the muscles pushing back against the pressure, helping to soothe chronic pain.

Which Massage is Right for You?

Both Swedish and deep tissue massages have significant benefits, but one may be more appropriate for you, depending on your needs. Seek out Swedish massage when you are feeling stressed or tense. This is a perfect option for someone who is looking for a pampering indulgence or full mind-body relaxation. Choose deep tissue massage if you have chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and lower back pain, or if you want a deeper structural massage to work out the kinks and knots.

Still Undecided?

We are here to help. Give us a call, and we can guide you. You will also have a consultation before your appointment with a licensed massage therapist to discuss what massage is best suited for your needs. It is possible to have a Swedish massage with some deep tissue work. Our goal is to ensure you receive the highest quality service. We will see you soon!

Why You Should Drink Water Before and After a Massage

We all know drinking water is good for your health. From regulating your body temperature and blood pressure to improving your mood, memory, and productivity, water is foundational to our life. Most of us know it’s important to drink the recommended eight glasses of water daily. On the day of your massage appointment, make sure to increase your water intake, and drink water before and after your massage.

When your muscles are manipulated during a massage, metabolic waste is released from the muscles and into the bloodstream. Just like when you exercise, massage can dehydrate muscles and remove electrolytes. Water intake before and after your massage will prevent unnecessary soreness, possible nausea, and an overall sluggish feeling following your massage.

Prevents Muscle Soreness and Aches

Depending on the massage you get and the pressure used, a massage can lead to soreness. Drinking water prevents this soreness because it works to move waste from building up in your muscles.

Improves Muscle Hydration

A massage session can deplete your muscles of water by shifting the water from your muscles to interstitial space. If you are getting a deep tissue massage, your electrolytes may become depleted. Drinking water can help to regain proper cell hydration to maximize muscle tone and strength following a massage.

Helps to Clear the Lymphatic System

Your lymphatic system is what is responsible for transporting wastes in your body for excretion. This system can get blocked by toxin buildup and infections. A massage clears waste from your muscles and circulates it into your lymphatic system. Drinking water helps to clear your lymphatic system.

Overall, if you ensure your body receives an abundance of daily water, your muscle tissue will remain healthier and hydrated, and ready to respond to every daily functional need. Be smart and kind to your body, and drink water before and after a massage!
